There are over 300 species of birds to be found in Hwange National Park, and in 2010 DART will be starting several new projects involving bird research. We plan to update and add to the existing data on raptors breeding within the park. We will also work with National Parks staff on a census of vulnerable species such as Crowned Cranes and on ringing of migrant waders.

The Raptor Nest Survey will involve the GPS mapping of all known nesting sites in the Park plus the gathering of data on the breeding habits of the birds.

As with other DART projects, Parks staff will be fully involved and data will be sourced from rangers on patrol and collated by DART. Any information we collect is sent to Birdlife Zimbabwe (BLZ) and is then available to other researchers through Birdlife International.
