The Sinamatella area of Hwange National Park contains one of the last wild populations of Black Rhino in Zimbabwe and the only population in the proposed Kavango-Zambezi Trans-frontier Park which covers parts of Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, Angola and Zambia.

DART staff and volunteers conduct regular census patrols, tracking rhino on foot with the aim of photographing all the animals in the IPZ and updating the existing data base. Such data enables National Parks to establish the the status and viability of the Rhino population in the area and allows Parks to deploy the Anti Poaching Patrols to where they are most needed.

It the near future many of the Rhino in the IPZ will be fitted with radio tracking transmitters and DART will be at the forefront of this operation.

Sinamatella has been declared an Intensive Protection Zone (IPZ) for the protection of the Black Rhino. The IPZ covers an area of  close to 2000 square kilometres of rugged terrain and is constantly patrolled by National Parks Anti Poaching Units.

In 2009 DART & The Save Foundation of Australia set up a base in Sinamatella with the aim of assisting National Parks in their efforts to audit and monitor the Black Rhino population.
