The Hwange Lion Research Project was established in 1999 to investigate the impact of commercial sport hunting on lion populations bordering the National Park. Based largely on the high-quality data collected by the Lion Research Project, the Authorities imposed a 5-year moratorium on all Lion Hunting around the Park. D.A.R.T is proud of the part it played in helping the Lion Researchers collect this essential data.

D.A.R.T continues to assist this important project in the following areas by locating and tracking collared Lions. GPS collars collect and store way-point information that can be downloaded to retrieve data and to see precisely where lions have been at specific times. Kill Site Investigations are conducted using data collected from GPS-collared lions, D.A.R.T Teams walk in to find previously unknown kill sites and collect information on the frequency of kills and preferred prey species. Lion Immobilisation and Collaring. Collection of kill site & faecal samples.

DART  teams frequently actively assist Lion Researchers in their field work, in the darting and collaring of lions out in the bush. This can entail camping out in remote areas of the Park amongst the wild prides. An experience never to be forgotten!
